White Sox Send Jesse Scholtens To The IL

Yet another IL stint for the Chicago White Sox with only seven games left on the schedule. Chicago announced that Jesse Scholtens has a strained calf and will end the season on the IL. Scholtens has been a permanent mainstay in the rotation due to injuries and trades. 

Scholtens is amid his third big league stint in 2023. He filled in throughout the season due to a slew of injured White Sox pitchers. Scholtens became a full-time starter after the Pale Hose Jettisoned two starting pitchers at the trade deadline. The righty worked out of the bullpen before moving to the rotation.

Did A Job

The results were very mixed for Scholtens in his first big-league action. He produced three consecutive quality starts in August, but the wheels quickly fell off. The rookie pitched to an ERA over eight through his last six starts. He pitched in relief in his final appearance and allowed six earned runs in two innings.

In a corresponding move, the White Sox recalled Declan Cronin to fill the vacated spot on the roster. Cronin is a White Sox 2019 draft pick taken in the 36th round. This will be the third stint for the rookie with the big-league club. Cronin has had a rough time getting major hitters out and sports an ERA over 11 in 7.2.

What's On Tap Next?

Scholtens appears to be a likely candidate for spring training in 2024. He may be able to provide some utility as a reliever or spot starter for the White Sox. Cronin made it to the big leagues due to injuries and trades but should find himself in camp with the White Sox in 2024.
